"We were able to raise $28,000 for our scholarship fund this year". FAN secretary/treasurer Wade Carpenter said. "On behalf of the entire FAN organization and gala committee I want to thank everyone who made this year's event such a great success."
SWTJC president Dr. Hector Gonzales welcomed everyone and delivered his state of the college address to a room full of Uvalde and area dignitaries, members of the business community, numerous SWTJC employees and members of the community.
“Our success is not possible without the support and partnerships of our businesses, school districts, universities, and communities we serve. Thank you for believing in SWTJC and thank you for believing in our students.” Gonzales said.
Gonzales commented on several issues including the future of the college specifically the measures being taken to improve student success and accountability. He also spoke about the forth-coming expansions in Castroville and Eagle Pass and the recent partnerships with area school districts and universities such as Sul Ross/Rio Grande College and Angelo State.
Other speakers included U.S Congressman Pete Gallego and SWTJC student George Melchor.
Melchor is a recipient of a SWTJC FAN Scholarship; in his testimonial, he told of the obstacles he has had to overcome in order to be successful in his studies.
“My biggest obstacle was paying for college, but with the help of SWTJC FAN I have been able to succeed in my endeavors,” Melchor stated. “I am grateful to SWTJC FAN for all their support.”
SWTJC board members, college administration and corporate sponsors were all recognized during the evening.
Founded in 2007, the SWTJC FAN has awarded over $160,000 in scholarships to hundreds of students.
