Southwest Texas Junior College (SWTJC) School of Vocational Nursing in Uvalde, Del Rio and Eagle Pass is currently accepting applications for the fall 2014. The deadline for applications is April 1, 2014.
The Vocational Nursing Program is delivered in a clinically intensive certificate program of approximately one year in length. The college accepts a total of 90 students (30 in Uvalde; 30 in Del Rio; and 30 in Eagle Pass) every year. The Texas Board of Nursing, and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board approve the program.
According to Amanda Hadley, Director of the Vocational Nursing Program, students accepted to the program will be instructed in the five basic areas of nursing care: 1) adults; 2) mothers and newborns; 3) children; 4) elderly; and 5) individuals with mental health problems. The initial clinical instruction takes place in the skills and simulation labs, progressing to faculty supervised, hands-on clinical experience in health care agencies.
The Vocational Nursing program is designed to prepare students to become Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs) who provide direct care to patients in a variety of settings within a directed scope of practice under appropriate supervisor. The Vocational nurse uses a systematic problem-solving process in the care of multiple patients with predictable health care needs to provide individualized, goal-directed nursing care.
Vocational Nursing represents the beginning level of the nursing practice continuum in the roles of Member of the Profession, Provider of Patient-Centered Care, Patient Safety Advocate, and Member of the Health Care Team.
The National League for Nursing recognizes that the licensed practical/vocational nurse (LPN/LVN) is a valuable member of the nursing community and significantly contributes to improving the health of the nation. The 2011 Institute Of Medicine report, "The Future of Nursing," acknowledges that licensed practical/vocational nurses are especially important to health care delivery because of their contributions to care in long-term care facilities, nursing homes, and community-based settings.
According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, 753,600 licensed practical/vocational nurses were employed in the US in 2008; projected job growth for this group of nurses is anticipated to be greater than the average rate, estimated to be 21 percent from 2008 to 2018 (2010-2011 Occupational Outlook Handbook). The aging populous and the escalating average age of the LPN/LVN workforce drive this job growth.
