SWTJC Uvalde student earns Coca-Cola scholarship

George Melchor, a student at Southwest Texas Junior College in Uvalde, has been named a 2014 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Gold Scholar. As a Gold scholar, Melchor receives a $1,500 scholarship and a special medallion.

The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation sponsors the academic team by recognizing 50 gold, 50 silver and 50 bronze scholars and providing nearly $200,000 in scholarships annually.

Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society administers the Coca-Cola academic team program and recognizes scholars selected during recognition ceremonies held in 38 states.

The Eta Beta Chapter of the international honor society Phi Theta Kappa inducted 25 new members this spring at Southwest Texas Junior College during ceremonies March 6 in Uvalde.

Blair receives lifetime achievement award, PTK wins state award

Barbara Blair, Phi Theta Kappa advisor and SWTJC history instructor, was awarded the "Lifetime Achievement Award for Outstanding Leadership and Service to the Texas Region" in Houston, Texas on March 1.

Blair was honored for her 38 years of service to the Eta Beta Chapter at the 2014 Texas Regional Convention. "I’m honored to have been given this award and it has been a complete joy to work with Phi Theta Kappa for all these years," Blair said.

Blair will be retiring from teaching at SWTJC this summer after 44 years of service.

Other awards won by the SWTJC Uvalde Eta Beta Chapter include: five-star chapter award; Icarus Award and the Honors in Action Award of Merit.
